Just Pace for iPhone and Apple Watch
Just Pace privacy policy
Just Pace keeps your running data on your devices. This policy explains what the app reads and writes, where it is stored, and how you stay in control.
Effective date: . Last updated: .
In short
- Just Pace has no user accounts, no advertising, no analytics, no tracking, no purchases, and no third-party software development kits.
- There is no Just Pace server. Nothing you do in the app is uploaded to Just Pace or to Yay! Project.
- Health and workout information is processed on your iPhone and Apple Watch, and only with your permission.
- For outdoor runs, and only with your permission, the device running the run (Apple Watch or iPhone) uses your location during the run to save a route with the workout. Location is never stored by the app or sent anywhere.
- Your Target Run presets and settings are stored on your devices and shared between them using Apple's device-to-device connection.
Who we are
Just Pace is made by Yay! Project, a collection of tools and projects by Adrian Lansdown. You can reach us about privacy at [email protected].
Apple Health data
Just Pace uses Apple's HealthKit framework to record a run and to show live feedback during it. It asks for the same permissions on iPhone and Apple Watch, and one answer covers both devices.
What Just Pace reads, and why
- Walking and running distance, to work out how far you have run, your current pace, and whether you are ahead of or behind your target.
- Heart rate, which the workout session collects while you run as part of recording the workout, when the device running it can measure it.
- Active energy and resting energy, which the workout session collects while you run so they can be saved with the workout.
- Running speed, running power, running stride length, running vertical oscillation, and running ground contact time, which Apple Watch measures during a run and the workout session collects so the saved workout matches what the Workout app records. A run on iPhone alone records whichever of these the phone can provide.
These readings are used during an active run, on whichever device is running it. Only distance and heart rate are used for what you see on screen; the rest is collected by the workout session and saved with the workout. Just Pace does not read your Health history for any other purpose, and it does not read any other Health data.
What Just Pace writes, and why
- Workouts, so each completed run is saved as a running workout in Apple Health and appears in the Fitness app.
- Walking and running distance, heart rate, active energy, resting energy, and the running metrics listed above, recorded during that workout, so the workout in Health is complete.
- Workout routes for outdoor runs, so the Fitness app can show a map of your run. See Location and run routes below.
How Health data is handled
- Health data is processed on your iPhone and Apple Watch. It is never uploaded to Just Pace or Yay! Project servers, because there are none.
- Health data is never used for advertising, marketing, or analytics, is never sold, and is never shared with third parties.
- Just Pace does not keep its own copy of your workout history. Completed runs live in Apple Health, where Apple's Health privacy practices apply.
- Any syncing or backup of Apple Health data between your own devices is handled by Apple under your iCloud and Health settings, not by Just Pace.
Location and run routes
For outdoor runs, Just Pace asks for location access while using the app on the device you run with: the Apple Watch, or the iPhone if you start the run there. With your permission, that device records a GPS route as you run and works out your elevation gain from it. On iPhone the route keeps recording while the phone is locked or in a pocket, and only for as long as the run is active. The route is saved with the workout in Apple Health as a Workout Route, so the Fitness app can show a map of where you ran.
- Location is used only during an active outdoor run. Just Pace does not use your location at any other time, and indoor runs do not use it at all.
- Just Pace does not keep its own copy of your location or your routes. The route lives with the workout in Apple Health, where Apple's Health privacy practices apply.
- Your location is never sent to Just Pace, Yay! Project, or anyone else.
- If you decline location access, outdoor runs are still recorded and saved to Apple Health, just without a route or map.
- You can change this at any time on either device under Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Just Pace.
Target Run presets and settings
A Target Run preset is a distance, a target finish time, and an indoor or outdoor setting. Presets, your distance unit, and your haptic settings are stored locally in the app's own storage on your iPhone.
So that you can start a run from your wrist, Just Pace sends your presets and settings to your paired Apple Watch using WatchConnectivity, Apple's direct connection between an iPhone and its Watch. The Watch keeps its own local copy. This data travels between your two devices only. It is not sent to Just Pace, Yay! Project, or anyone else.
What we do not collect
Just Pace does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. Specifically, the app has:
- no user accounts or sign-in,
- no analytics or crash reporting,
- no advertising and no ad identifiers,
- no tracking across apps or websites,
- no in-app purchases or subscriptions,
- no third-party software development kits, and
- no remote backend or server of its own.
We do not sell data, because we do not have any. If you email us for support, we receive whatever you choose to put in that email and use it only to reply to you.
Your control, retention, and deletion
- Health permissions. You control what Just Pace can read and write in the Health app on iPhone: tap your picture, then Apps, then Just Pace. You can change or withdraw permission at any time. Withdrawing it stops future runs being recorded to Health, but does not delete workouts already saved there.
- Location permission. On Apple Watch or iPhone, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Just Pace. Withdrawing it stops future outdoor runs having a route, but the runs are still recorded.
- Workouts. Runs saved to Apple Health, including any routes, stay there until you delete them in the Health or Fitness app.
- Presets. Delete a preset in Just Pace on iPhone and it is removed from your Watch too.
- Deleting the app. Deleting Just Pace from your iPhone removes its presets and settings from that device, and deleting it from your Watch removes the Watch's copy. Workouts already saved to Apple Health remain in Health.
Because nothing is stored outside your devices, there is nothing for us to retain or delete on your behalf.
Children's privacy
Just Pace does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. Because the app records workouts to Apple Health, any Family Sharing or parental controls that apply to Health on the device apply to Just Pace as well.
Changes to this policy
If Just Pace ever changes how it handles data, we will update this page and the dates at the top of it before the change takes effect. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
